HISTORY

The first English Foxhounds date back to the late 18th century, where this breed was widely used by British nobility on their regal fox hunts. The conscious combination of the Greyhound, Bulldog, and Fox Terrier, the Foxhound was bred to have excellent speed, tenacity, and hunting intuition. Studbooks for these dogs can be traced as far back as the early 1800s. They were first received by the AKC in 1909.

Personality

The English Foxhound is a dedicated hunter that is exceptionally loyal and obedient to their master. They can be tough to train because of their independent nature, but they are still great with kids and make for a good family dog, assuming the family is willing to take the time to properly train them. They are very athletic dogs, which means that if they are not given ample opportunity to unwind they may become destructive. These are not dogs suited for apartment living. .

Color

Foxhounds are usually a tri-color combination of black, white, and tan, but can also be a bi-color of white with another color, like orange, yellow, etc.

    Appearance

    The English Foxhound is a very athletic breed, with a lean, muscular body that is built for endurance. They have a long muzzle, a broad head, and drooped ears that hang down close to the side of their head. They have a short, hard coat, and a long tail which is typically held erect. The male Foxhounds grow up to about 24 inches and weigh somewhere around 65 pounds.
