HISTORY
The Anatolian Shepherd Dog, first bred to guard livestock, hails from Asia Minor (aka Anatolia, or modern day Turkey). Coming from an area with such a wide range of harsh climates, this breed is capable of withstanding both intense heat and freezing cold. Aside from being durable, these dogs could also take on wolves and walk away, making them valuable for their ferocity as well as their durability.

Personality
Despite their name, the Anatolian Shepherd is not really a herding dog, but more often a guardian, protecting flocks from dangers. They are generally calm, smart, and attentive dogs that can become territorial if allowed to call the shots. Given their guarding tendencies, the Anatolian Shepherd can become over protective, but is also more than willing to concede to a strong human pack leader. Not a great first dog, this large breed demands a naturally decisive owner in order to be trained. .
Color
The Anatolian Shepherd is typically a mostly tan breed with black fur around the muzzle and ears. Occasionally they can be white or sable.
Health Concerns
The Anatolian Shepherd Dog lives anywhere from 12 to 15 years. Puppies need extra vaccinations against parvo-virus since their immunity takes longer to develop. It is important to check for:

Appearance
The Anatolian Shepherd is a massive dog. They have a square muzzle and a wide head. Their triangular ears hang down alongside their head. They are powerfully built dogs, with a strong neck and a barrel chest. Their coat can be either short or long, the short being softer than the rough longer coat.
