HISTORY

Thought to have been around for some 2,000 years, the Tibetan Spaniel is thought to be a close relative to the Pekingese, Pug, and Japanese Spaniel. Thought to be a token of good luck, this breed was a common gift given to royal houses in ancient China. This breed was used to help guard monasteries, as they would bark at any intruder. They were acknowledged by the AKC in 1983.

A smart, happy, lively dog, the Tibetan Spaniel makes for an excellent addition to any family. They are quick to create a bond with their family, and easily make the distinction between family and stranger, barking to alert their people about anyone they perceive as a trespasser. They may be slightly difficult to train and need to be told that they are not the head of the household. If your Tibetan Spaniel is properly trained and socialized, they will be a pleasant and playful companion. .

Appearance

The Tibetan Spaniel is a small dog. They have expressive eyes, a short, strong muzzle, and droopy ears. Their coat is silky and medium-length, with light feathering on their tail, forelegs, and ears. Males also have longer hairs around their neck that vaguely resemble a mane.
