We found a very sick possum in our shed three days ago. His fgace and vent area were covered in crusted sores. The vet says it is a staph infection due to lowered immune system and stress (it's the toughest time of year for pussums here at present as food is very scarce). She prescribed Bactrim, which is already making a visible improvement.
My question is: I understand that Little Poss should be released when he recovers, but if stress caused this disease, I fear he may simply have another outbreak. Also I understand that it is hard to release possums as they are very territorial. We regularly have fights between up to six possums who visit my back veranda. My present thoughts are to establish him in his current box on the FRONT veranda, where possums do not seem to visit, and once he has become used to sleeping and eating in this area, remove any netting etc. we may have used to kepp him in, but continue to provide food, at least for the next few months. Do you think this ha
Sorry, my practice is limited to dogs and cats. vetcare
