My cat Balki examined by a vet who took a blood test and said he was going to start losing weight as he had a thyroid problem developing and would need to start taking thyroid medication.
What's his prognosis if he doesn't take it now, and what kind of medication is it? Balki only eats Hills Science Diet, nothing else, including people food and moist pet food. Just water and Hills. He's about 14 years old and in great shape.
My husband thinks the vet just wants us to spend money. This was the first time we'd used this vet and he makes housecalls. I'm not so sure my husband is right. I don't want to delay treatment if it's what Balki needs. Also if we do have to medicate, what is the best wy to give it to him?
It depends on the thyroid values. If your vet ran a T4 test and the values were above 4.0 then I recommend that you start medication. Your cat will become very sick if you do not. The medication is called tapazole and it is given for life. Other options include surgery or radioactive therapy. Good luck, vetcare
