I recently adopted a 2 year old male poodle. He is cafe au lait in color and doing great. He has a constant drainage on the fur around the nasal corners of his eyes which turns dark brown and mats up. I have a friend with a white poodle who has the same problem. What can we do to prevent or treat this discoloration? When Freddie was groomed 2 weeks ago they couldn't clean it all off.
This is very common in poodles. Your pet is either producing too many tears or the tear ducts are blocked. There is no good product out there that treates the staining left behind by the tears. Mnay products are sold over the counter but in my experience they do not work. You can talk to your vet about having the tear ducts flushed out. Tetracycline is an antibiotic that also helps but I usually do not recommend this b/c this is more of a cosmetic problem as opposed to a medical problem.(there is no infection) Basically, that is life with these types of dogs.
