My 3 yr old chow/shep mix has been suffering from skin problems the past 2 yrs. Last year we got her a steriod injection which I don't want to keep doing as it is not good for her longterm. She has the same type of problem now, thin hair, bald strip on her tail, flaky, itchy, scabby, she smells awful. I suspect mange, and have used Happy Jack on localized areas which helps, but it has a horrendous odor.
The past week she has been drinking large amounts of water so I am wondering if it is something else? I love her to pieces, but my spouse is out of work, and I cannot afford testing and multiple mange injections.
Any advice for anything I can do for her without a vet's treatment? Thank you.
It really sounds like a vet should see her to make a diagnosis. It could be mange, flea allergy or any other type of allergy. Try Benadryl 50 mg 2 x daily and a flea shampoo until you can get to the vet. good luck, vetcare
