my cairn terrior is 12 years old and has been diabetic for about a year. He takes two injections of insulin a day, 11 units in aam and 12 in pm.
I feed him regular dog food measured 1/2 cup dry and 1/4 wet in am and 3/4 dry and 1/4 wet in pm. He stays very fat I wonder if there is a special food for diabetics or if this is simply too much food. I also have trouble getting him to eat and have to change foods often or he gets bored and won't eat. I would appreciate any tips on slimming him down and finding something he will eat better. Before his diabetes he loved cookies treats and people food.
I recommend science diet w/d diet for obese diabetics. It is more important that your pet eats then what he eats, in my opinion. It is ok add a little chicken broth or boiled chick/ beef to the diet to stimulate appetite. vetcare
