I started my dog on heartworm preventative at age one. She is now five. The past several months she develops a cough that expells phlem and mucus. A vet did some test and said that she has heart worms. I have always been told that if you start a dog on heartworm preventative after they have heartworms that it would kill them. Is this true? Also, the medication of clavinox and prednisone will clear her up for several months. Please give me your general opinion before I pursue the expense of this treatment.
If your pet has active heartworm dz then it needs to be treated for heartworm dz. Clavamox and pred will not treat the heartwom dz. The preventative has the potential to kill a dog that is heartworm positive. This is why it is so important to test for heartworm every year even if your pet is on preventative, vetcare
