We have a 5 yr old Chihuahua mix (about 20#) who is constantly scratching himself. He sleeps on the foot of our bed, and my husband is about to launch him if he doesn't quit shaking the bed with his scratching. Every 6 months our vet gives Cheech a cortisone shot & that seems to help him. Close to the end of 6 mo Cheech's hair starts to fall out & the scratching gets much worse. Do you know what this is? What else can we do for Cheech? We bathe him once a week--is that too ofter?
This could be an allergy, possibly a food allergy. You may want to try a trial of hypoallergenic food called z/d. It is sold through vets only. You may also want to consider allergy testing. It is a simple blood test. A second opinion with a dermatologist is not a bad idea either. vetcare
