I have 2 rotties, 1 male who will be 4 in a month and a female that is 2 yrs old. My male is neutered, and my female is not spayed. My male has always chewed and licked the carpet until a whole was made. Now my female is doing the same thing. They will lick on a spot of carpet and nibble on it until there is a hole. I have put pepper on the carpet and other pet repellent sprays, this has not helped at all. I would like to get new carpet but not until I can get this behavior to stop. I have tried postive re-enforcement, and a firm no when they are caught in the act, but nothing has helped. It was suggested to me that they may be lacking a vitamin or something similar to that in their diet....please let me know any health possiblities for this and or answers to stop this behavior, besides leaving them outside...they are inside dogs.
This is a behavior problem not a medical condition ( lacking vitamin) The dogs are bored. I would keep pieces of the old carpet around the house so the dogs can chew on it. The problem is that if they swollow a chunk of the carpet it could result in an intestinal obstruction. You have to watch them. I would buy several toys and rotate the toys so the dogs do not loose interest and gain interest in your new carpet. Good luck, vetcare
