I have a young mixed breed dog who is about a year old. His parents are probably Chow/Lab mixes. He seems to have a slight vision problem which was checked by the vet when he was a puppy. Now, he has grown into a medium large dog (about 40+ pounds) and is inclined to be set off by any slight distraction into a snapping period. He has bitten me several times (not severely, but enough to make me extremely cautious around him. I need to move him to another pen but an unwilling to take the chance at this time. I was told I could use Kava Kave supplements to help keep him calmer. Is this so? And, if so, does it do the dog any harm? Also, any suggestions about trying to calm down this animal so he can be handled would be very welcome. I have raised him from a pup and would like to see him a healthy well-adjusted young dog that I can allow the same privileges that I do my other dogs.
It sounds like your pet has a serious problem with aggression and should be seen by a good trainer. Giving your pet medicine to "calm him down" will only work for the short term and sounds dangerous b/c medicine doesn't prevent your pet from biting. I have never heard of the drug you mentioned.
