I have been to several veterinarians, due to my dogs repetetive and chronic ear infections and licking of the paws. other than he was tested for allergies, both food and air pollutants, we seem to always get a general answer and get medicine to help him temporarily. I can't find anything on what can help (mainly the ear infections, which are yeast by the way). my rodesian ridgeback suffers daily from constantly being uncomfortable. do you have any suggestions. I live on Long Island, in New York. I could go on but will just highlight the problem. If you want more info. I'd be happy to send explicit details of the allergies. When his ears flair up which is more often than not he gets otomax, gentacin, and occassionally prenisone. when we use the prenisone he helps the most, but the week he's off.. its starts again. the other 2 medications just seem to help his ears not to get really bad.
Thank you in advance for your time.
Unfortunately, There is no cure for allergies. Everything you described to me is related to allergies. The best way to deal with your pets pain and disconfort is to use the medicine that makes him feel best. If the prednisone relieves him then I recommend that you continue the lowest efective dose for life or until the allergy shots are helping more. Allergy shots do not always help. If the medicine is not working in your pets ears then talk to your vet about a procedure called a lateral ear resection or an ear ablation. Both surgical procedures help relieve the disconfort of chronic ear infections. Good luck, vetcare
