My 2 year old Standard Poodle was tested for heartworms prior to being put on heartworm medication. His test came back negative. He has been on heartworm medication (preventative) since his test. He is given the medication on a 12 month basis, as we travel with our dog, between Canada and Florida. He is also on a monthly flea preventative.
Is is necessary to repeat this hearworm test, as requested by my veterinarian? If his test was negative and he is taking medication to prevent heartworm, why would he need to be retested?
Preventative medicine is not 100% all the time. I usually test every 2 years in your situation but florida has a serious problem with heartworm disease so I can understand why they want to be on the safe side. vetcare
