Are you aware of a specific infection or disease that would cause my 8 year olc black lab mix to lose his claws. He is on antibiotics but keeps losing them and is miserable. This has affected all of his paws since late January, losing one claw at a time. With the first loose claw, the vet removed it and gave Rimadyl and Cephalexin (there was pus in the claw - it was tested and confirmed infected but a specific infection was not mentioned). A second claw came loose about a week later. Another vet visit and the Cephalexin was continued with Rimadyl again for five days. He's been to the vet the third and fourth times to remove loose claws. I know of one that he had licked off himself. He is now taking Medrol for five days. My vet admittedly does not know a cause for this but did mention a type of lupus in dogs and that there is not much known about it. What can you tell me about any of this this?
Fungal infections can cause this. I have seen dogs who have had their nails removed because of deep fungal infections. I would recommend a fungal culture and biopsy. Talk to your vet about it. vetcare
