My cat is just over 1 year old and compulsively licks and pulls her hair out everywhere she can reach. The rest of the hair is very thick and soft but she has made herself almost completely bald in a big circle around her back and underparts. she has been examined by 2 vets more than once who concur she is physically fine. Has been treated with prednazone and Advantage to rule out any other causes. She not only licks and pulls her hair out but has started on the couch and my fur-trimmed coat. Her skin is not dry and she does not seem to be in any pain. Is there any way to make her stop this??
This can be a tricky diagnosis in cats. Sometimes the cause of this is bahavioral and sometimes it is medical. Allergies are a common cause and your cat should probably be tested. Some cats respond very well to steroids, others respond well to anti-anxiety meds. Ask your vet for a referral to a dermatologist. A specialist may be able to find the true answer behind the problem. vetcare
