Took our West Highland Terrier in last Monday for her heart worm shot . By Thursday she had started acting weird took her back into Vet on Friday . She had not been eating and acting like she was not feeling well. Vet. took a ultra sound said she did not have cancer but some other problems. Said her gums showed dehydration told us to force feed her and gave more pills to give her . Saturday morning early she woke up in pain then went into seizures and past away. Vet. never said it could of been the shot but after reading this info I think it could of been. She was almost 12 yrs old and was doing fine till she got the shot so warning to others stay with the pill every month. Miss my Westie
so glad I saw this article and comments. Just got back from the Vet this morning and vet suggested me to give a shot for 1 year heartworm in April with my dog's annual vaccation shot. In this case, I am not going to do this heartworm shot then. So........terrible.
I hope your dog is doing better. I just got reminder for my dog's next injection and we are not going back!
I am reading this in horror. My vet gave my 12 year old chihuahua this shot and she already had high liver enzymes. This is horrible.
YES!!! See my response to Steve!! What can we do???
Whoa...so glad I saw this article and comments. My 7 year old Dane is showing sings of renal failure as well - just got back from the Vet this morning to do another round of testing and a urinalysis....She received this shot back in August at her annual check up and I swear, I just told my colleague through tears that something in my heart isn't adding up. Could it be that shot she received back in August?? So I googled "Heartworm shot" and here I am.
My 9 yr old lab was recently diagnosed with kidney failure at her routine yearly check up. She had her 1st Proheart injection 5 Mos ago ( even though I just read not supposed to start it after age 7). Vet says no correlation, but then I saw this post. Wondering if any other pets with kidney failure after proheart injection.
Terrible. So sorry for your loss
Full renal failure - in 4 weeks after getting Proheart 6 shot. It's no better than going to a regular doctor, none of them will admit when they give you (or a dog) something that has harmful side effects.
We have a 5yr old full breed German Shepherd that was on Heartguard monthly tablets since she started taking heartworm meds...our vet recently talked us into changing her over to the Proheart6 about two and half weeks ago. As of today she has lost almost 10 lbs, lethargic, drinking non-stop and just found out she is now has renal failure. In route now to have ultrasound done and other tests. The vet says Proheart isn't reporting any major side effects associated with thier medicine - why does "but of course" come to mind! Anyone else hear of such a reaction?
