Hi, our 13 year old pug has been licking and biting her paws mostly at night. It is mostly her front paws. We take her to her Veteranarian to have her nails cut, but she had no answers as to why she might be doing this. Do you think I could try the PetCare brand of hydrocortisone on her paws to see if it would help, or if she still licks them with the hydrocortisone on can this make her sick? I heard somewhere that it is OK to give dogs benadryl and St. Joseph's asprin if needed. Is this true? If so can I try giving her a benadryl? She won't let me get near her paws, she guards them well! Please help! Thank You, Diane.
Allergies can cause a dog to lick their paws. Some pets will do it if they are bored, anxious or have an infection or cysts between the digits. Treatment can vary but some dogs benefit from antibiotcs, cortisone and or antihistamines. You should talk this over with your vet. Beneadryl is safe in the appropriate dose given to a healthy dog but I have not had great success with it. vetcare
