My vet says that dogs don't have to be tested for heartworm - or treated - since the treatment is extremely risky. He said that one can give their dog Heartgard Plus - even if their dog might have heartworm - and the microfilaria will be killed by the Heartgard Plus with the adult worms dying at maturity and sluffed out of the dog's system. I have treated my dog for 2 years with Heartgard Plus, and my dog is happy and healthy - he exhibited signs of heartworm in the beginning. What is your feeling on this?
Heartworm dx kills dogs and I disagree with your vet, if your vet actually said what you say. The goal of treatment is to kill both adult worms and microfilaria. Immiticide is used to kill adult worms and this treatment, performed appropriately is safe to use. I have never had a problem with this medication and it has a very safe record. Ivermectin is used to kill microfilaria. Heartguard is not approved for the use of treating heartworm dz and it will not cure heartwom dz. Thanks, vetcare
