Max was getting a little gimpy, at age 12. But could still get around, but was having trouble getting up the 18 inches to my bed. One evening, his right rear leg tucked under him and he couldn't get up. He howled and cried and made such fuss. I treated him with four enteric coated aspirin, and after an hour he limped into the house. Next day, he was crying and couldn't get up. Treated again with aspirin and glucosamine (regularly given) and he was still mostly down. It breaks my heart to see this big guy so painfully down. I'm a disabled vet and have no means to pay for surgery. Is Rimadyl an option? In desperation I gave him 250 mg vicodin, which seemed to help, but I know he can't take that for very long. He has been an active and healthy dog all his life, and has had no other health problems. He is a belgian shepherd/akita/chow mix, but a real sweetheart. We live in the Mojave desert, so I thought the warmer weather now would help him out. Please help.
Do not self medicate your pet. This can be very dangerous. There are plenty of anti-inflammatory medications avail for dogs that will probably help. Your vet should examine your pet. vetcare
