I recently adopted a 4 year old Shih Tzu from an animal adoption center. Two days after we took him home, he was sniffing and had a runny nose, then he began coughing and it sounds like he is trying to cough something up. We were prescribed Doxycycline Hyclate 100mg by a nurse at the adoption center who diagnosed him with kennel cough very quickly and did nothing more than take his temp and look at his face. Im wondering if this an accurate diagnosis. She told we could use Infant formula of Robitussin DM to sooth his cough. He hasnt had a fever, however his mood has changed, he seems sad and is not as active. I read somewhere that if he seems depressed it might not be kennel cough. He has had his Bordetella vaccination, when he got to the kennel. What else do you think it could be, is it serious, do we need to take him to a vet.
I recommend a visit with your local vet whenever you adopt or purchase a new pet. vetcare
