My neutered 5 yr. old female cat was prescribed Amitriptyline HCI (5mg. daily) after having been treated and cleared of a urinary tract infection. She was given a clean bill of health after lab tests with the exception that she still had strong urine and needed to drink more water. The prescription was given because the cat is still having problems with marking (urine puddles and dribbles) in areas other than her litter box on a daily basis. My question is what are the side effects of this medication? Does it cause thirst? Vet suggested getting the cat to drink more water: how can this be achieved? Any help in addition to my own vet's advise is appreciated since more knowledge can only help my cat and (I).
Thank you very much,
The most common side effect of amitriptyline is seadtion. You can add water to her food to help with water intake. vetcare
