What can be done to help a cocker spaniel who is in kidney failure?
He goes outside to pee many times a day and eat cold snow. I don't know how much he pees because he is drinking so little and eating almost nothing. I have to finger-feed him. I have a wonderful vet but thought I would see what someone else has to say.
Chronic Renal Disease is usually an old age related disease with no true cure. People receive kidney transplants for this but most dog owners do not go this far and the surgery has not been perfected yet. Supportive therapy is best. Make sure your pet is well hydrated. Subcutaneous fluids given at home is your best bet unless you want to hospitalize your pet for IV fluids. Antacids, anti vomit meds and antibiotics are also helpful. You may want to consider a special diet such as science diet k/d ( made for the kidneys) but if your pet is already not eating well, then I do not know if the diet will change anything. Good luck, vetcare
