I have a 4 year old Cairn Terrier. She was tested for allergies, and has been getting Allergen injections for 2 years. They don't seem to be helping much. She was on Atarax (25mg) last year which didn't seem to help much. She has been on Prednisone for over a year. I'm getting concerned with this length of time on that. She'll be OK for a few days then starts chewing her paws, and dragging her rump acros the floor. She also seems to lick the carpet a lot like her tongue itches. She also does the hacking, and reverse sneezing. Can you recommend anything else we might try? I was going to try the Atarax again, bit I found out what I paid last year (sept.) $16.00 for 45 pills, now costs $51.00. I will appreciate your comments.
It sounds like you are between a rock and a hard place. The prednisone works but you do not want the side effects. In these difficult allergy cases I try to maintain the dogs on the lowest effective dose of pred. Usually if they go of the pred the quality of life starts to diminsih do to the allergies. vetcare
