I have a chihuahua that is 3 yrs.old now and he has hydrocephalus he seems to be doing well other than i have noticed that twice he seems to have had a seizsure he has been on lasix and diazepam 5mg. and prednisone 5 mg.i have taken him off all meds. because they do not seem to help do you have any suggestions on what to do to help my vet does not know much about this disease i was told he would not live to be 1 yr old and as far as i know the only signs he has are one eye is larger and they float back and forth his head is very large and some times he seems to have a fit where he is uncontrolable he requires more attention than the other dogs any suggestions i would be grateful.
Te medication that your vet recommended is the treatment of choice. Some dogs that have a mild form of congenital hydocephalus have a good prognosis and only require occasional medial treatment. If you have noticed a deterioration in mental allertness , behavioral changes or problems with vision then the problem may be getting worse. There is a surgical procedure available for this but you would need to see a specailist. A MRI would provide a definitive diagnoisis . Good luck, vetcare
