Danielle (Dani) is 12 years old and she was recently diagnosed with hyperthyroidism. One of the consequences of this is that she is losing weight. She now weighs 5 pounds. Her best weight is 6 pounds. She is on Tapizole for her thyroid, and I'm wondering if that may even be kind of making her lose her appetite even a bit more. I have heard there is an antihistimine that acts like an appetite enhancer when given to cats, but I don't remember which one it was. It may have been benedryl, but I'm not sure. Can you tell me something about that? Is this the same kind of antihistime that I can buy over the counter and give to Dani in the correct dosage, or is this only available through a vet.
Sometimes when cats are initially started on tapazole they may loose their appetite. If this happens some cats need to be hospitialized until their body adjusts to the drug. Your cat will start to gain weight once the medication starts working. There are other options for therapy including surgery and radioactive iodine therapy. vetcare
