I have 2 female cocker spaniels.(one is 9 1/2 yr old, the other almost 4 yr old)The younger one(whom we adopted from the shelter)has a chronic licking problem. She loves to jump up in your lap. When she does, she will lick your leg, hand, furniture you are sitting on, pillows, blankets- almost anything! She doesn't lick herself-just other objects. (almost as if she was cleaning them) WE notice this problems is much worse at night. Any ideas as to what may cause this?? She is, otherwise, a very healthy, normal dog who takes no medications (outside of a heartworm pill). Our other cocker has never acted this way.
Your pet may have obessive compulsive disorder. This is an anxiety related disorder. If this behavior is causing you alarm then I recommend that you talk to your vet about anti-anxiety medication.Good luck,Vetcare
