I have a 5 year old (spayed) Australian Shepard X. Last August she had a bladder infection and my vet found crystals in her urine. This was the first bladder infection she ever had. Since then, she has had three more and has become incontinent, but she no longer has crystals. My vet suggested a homemade diet, rather than kibble, which is supplemented with a canine vitamin tablet. She takes phenylpropanolamine (25 mg) twice a day, as DES didn't control her incontinence. During this current infection, she leaked a rather large puddle of urine before starting on a 14 day round of SMZ tabs, 1/2 of a 960 mg tab, twice a day. Do you have any ideas what could be causing the incontinence and infections, or any suggestions as to what we could try to treat them? Thanks so much for your input.
I recommend an x-ray. She may have bladder stones that are causing the recurring infections. vetcare
