I have a Black Lab that is almost 14 years old. She has been taking Rimadyl for arthritis in her back legs for almost a year. She also was diagnosed with nerve dysfunction in her back leg (she drags her back paw). She has been getting worse over the past year and I'm wondering if it's time to put her to sleep. She has a hard time getting up and is initially unstable. We have hardwood floors and she falls and can't get up. She can get up on carpet, but it's difficult. Upon rising, one of her legs sometimes will twist around the other leg. When she tries to sit, it's painful and she just plops down to a laying position. She still greets me at the door with her tag wagging and she is eating and drinking normally. I realize that she cannot be cured, but is there other medication that could relieve her pain and help her walk, or is it best to have her put to sleep?
You may want to talk to your vet about trying steroids. This may help but I can not tell you for sure. If it does not work, then it sounds like you have to make a tough decision. I always tell people if their pet stops eating or the pets quality of life is suffering then it is time. I am sorry. vetcare
