We have a 1 year old Golden Retriever (Lady). Lady began having seizures after Christmas---she had 3 w/i 2 weeks. Our vet did a blood workup, and everything came back within normal limits. We did change her diet from puppy dog food to adult dog food and eliminated Bil Jac treats as the vet said it could possibly be a protein build up causing the seizures. She had a seizure again on Saturday and another seizure tonight. We are taking her back to the vet tomorrow to check her glucose levels. Should we be checking anything else? Our vet said that it could be unexplained epilepsy and that if the glucose comes back normal, she would like to treat Lady with a low dose of phenobarbital. What is your opinion on this treatment?
We are very concerned about our dog. Do the seizures cause her pain? They are quite scary when they happen. We have been giving her valium after each seizure to prevent another onset of seizures.
I am looking for another opinion. Thanks for your help.
The most common cause of seizures is idiopathic epilepsy. I usually run a bile acids test along with other tests such as a general blood screen. I agree with the treatment of phenobarbitol. vetcare
