I have a seven year old Pomeranian, he has an enlarged heart and is on Enacard (for about one year) about three years ago he started getting this cough, sound almost like a cat with a fur ball, my vet said it is common in small dogs, because their Trachea is narrow and contracts when they get excited. Is there any kind of doggie cough medicine I can give him.
First, it should be determined if the cough is upper airway (trachea) or lower airway (Lungs). An x-ray of your pets chest should be taken b/c dogs with heart dz sometimes have pulmonary edema. Pulmonary edema will cause a cough. This is usually treated with Lasix. If it is truely an upper airway cough then you can try Tussigon. Talk to your vet about it. Good luck, vetcare
