My dog, a 13-year old Cocker Spaniel, immune system is attacking his platelets. Not sure why, they've tested for Cancer and that was negative. In any case, they started him on prenisone. It worked the first day increasing his platelets from 10,000 to 20,000 however when they tested it the next day it had gone back down. They're now looking to start him on a stronger treamement similar to cheomotherapy type drugs. Any advice or idea as to what's happening. A friend of mine suggested he might have HIV. Appreciate your feedback.
Your pet does not have HIV. Dogs do not get this disease. It sounds like you already know what your pet has. From what you describe, it is called an autoimmune mediated thrombocytopenia. The immune system "views" your pets thrombocytes as a foreign body and attacts them. This is a very serious disease. vetcare
