We recently lost a 7 mo. old kitten to distemper (vet diagnosed from blood test). He didn't have shots yet. We have 6 older cats who have been vaccinated (2 yrs. to 12 yrs. but they are a year behind in their boosters.) All cats are house cats kept inside. We want to bring in another kitten, age 3 mos. who hasn't had both series of shots yet. I want to know if I can bring him in the house this soon with only one vaccination, given a week ago, being that our other kitten died from this disease and in the same house. He is in an enclosed area with others from his litter, but on our property. They are all in process of getting their vaccinations. Also, how 'catchy' is distemper? Where could he have gotten it if no cats go out and all outside strays stay outside? Is it airborn, contact, prolonged contact, etc? Thank you.
I would wait until your cat has been fully vaccinated past 14 weeks of age. It is highly contagious airborne and contact. vetcare
