I have a Golden Retreiver that is about to turn 8 years old....we noticed him having seizures when he was about 2 years old. The seizures werent bad, very mild..well now they are getting worse. I have been told we can put him on Phenibarbatol(sp) but i have heard it will make them just lay around and that it is very bad on their kidneys and other organs...Is this true??? And will it stop the seizures completely??? My dog is sooo healthy otherwise..and very active..when he does have a seizure they are lasting around 5 minutes..and he doesnt loose control of bowels or anything...Help i dont know what to do...please give me an answer..i need another opinion...thanks..
Your dogs seizures are lasting a very long time, this worrys me. If the frequency of the seizures are 2x within 6 weeks or more then I definately recommend phenobarbitol. Initially your pet will be a little drowsy but that will subside when your dogs body adjusts to the grug. Most drugs have side effects but you have to weight out the benefits vs side effects.Your vet will probably monitor your dogs liver enzymes will on pheno. Nothing will completly stop seizues bit phenobarbitol will help control them, reduce the frequency and decrease length. Thanks, vetcarerx vet team
