Methio-Form is a prescription medication available in the form of chewable tablets. It is a urinary acidifier indicated in the treatment and prevention of certain types of urinary stones in dogs. It is also used for diluting dog’s urine. Methionine is an essential amino acid, which should be obtained from food as it is not synthesized by the body. It helps to reduce the chances of stones in dogs by chelating heavy metals such as lead, cadmium and mercury and expelling them from the body.
Refrain from using Methio-Form in pets with proven liver, kidney or pancreatic disease. It should be never be used in animals with kidney stones or metabolic acidosis. Never combine this drug with food that acidifies the urine unless specifically instructed by veterinarian. Extreme caution is required while administering Methio-Form with aminoglycoside antibiotics such as gentamicin or quinidine. Always reveal to the veterinarian, the details of other medications, nutritional supplements and vitamins that the pet is on.
Daily dosages normally depend on the type of diet. The recommended daily dose range in cats is 1 ½ to 3 tablets depending on the body weight of the cat. For dogs, the ideal daily dose would be ½ to 4 tablets for up to 15 lbs and for bigger dogs weighing 33-66 lbs, it should be 4 to 13 tablets. The tablets could be given fully or by breaking up into small pieces with food.
Clinical results show that the medication is well tolerated by dogs. However, in some cases, side effects such as loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting or diarrhea are reported, which should be intimated to the veterinarian immediately. Over dosage can result in serious and often fatal metabolic acidosis, which calls for urgent medical intervention. Symptoms of overdose might include loss of appetite, pale mucous membranes, and imbalance.
