Doxepin, belonging to the group of tricyclic antidepressant drugs, is a psychotropic agent known for its anxiolytic and antidepressant properties and anticholinergic and sedative effects. Doxepin is recommended for the treatment of depression and/or anxiety. The medication is effective for the treatment of noise phobia, depression, anxiety and obsessive compulsive disorders (OCD) in canines like acral lick dermatitis.The active ingredient, doxepin, is a strong antihistamine, effective against the dopamine receptors in the central nervous system. The analgesic action of the medicine is triggered by the sodium channel blocking activity of the active ingredient, Doxepin Hydrochloride.
The medication should not be used in pets with hypersensitivity, glaucoma and urinary retention related medical problems. Extreme caution is required when used in seizure prone animals. Drug interactions are reported with the usage of Doxepin. The medication should not be used with monoamine oxidase inhibitors, sedatives, antihistamines, norepinephrine, thyroid medications, atropine, and phenytoin. It is recommended to inform the veterinarian about the medications the pet is taking.
Doxepin is supplied as 10 mg, 25 mg, 50 mg, 75 mg, 100 mg, and 150 mg capsules and as a 10 mg/ml oral concentrate. The recommended dosage for dogs is 0.25 - 0.5 mg/lbs (0.5 to 1 mg/kg) orally twice a day or 1.5 - 2.5 mg/lbs (3 - 5 mg/kg) orally every 8 to 12 hours. There is no recommended dosage for cats. The duration of the dosage is based on the clinical condition of the pet and it is advised to complete the prescription unless otherwise directed by the veterinarian or pharmacist.

The commonly observed side effects include low blood pressure, high blood pressure, drowsiness, rapid heart rate, dry mouth and constipation. In rare instances, doxepin turns urine blue-green in color.
