Indications for Gentak Ophthalmic Ointment

Gentak Ophthalmic Ointment is used in the topical treatment of conjunctivitis caused by susceptible bacteria in dogs and cats. Conjunctivitis is a condition which mainly occurs in pets, and in animals of any age. Conjunctivitis refers to an inflammation of the conjunctiva, the tissue, which functions as a coating for the eye and lines the eyelids. The disease is often caused by viral infections, such as canine distemper, bacterial eye infections, parasites of the conjunctiva or eyelids, corneal diseases, disorders of the tear ducts, eyelid infections or abnormalities, exposure to external materials such as fibers, sand, chemicals, trauma, allergies and various other illnesses such as skin diseases. The major symptoms of conjunctivitis include discomfort, irritation, discharge from watery to thick pus and mucus, and redness of the eye.Gentak Ophthalmic Ointment is a sterile ointment, each gram of which contains Gentamicin sulfate or 3 mg Gentamicin in a base of mineral oil and white petrolatum. Gentak sulfate is essentially water soluble antibiotic belonging to the aminoglycoside group. It helps in combating different varieties of pathogenic gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria.

Precautions

Certain precautions should be taken before administering Gentak Ophthalmic Ointment to your pet. It is necessary to pre-determine the antibiotic susceptibility of infecting organisms before using the preparation. Using topical antibiotics for a longer period might result in a significant growth in non-susceptible organisms such as fungi. In case this occurs or if irritation or hypersensitivity develops, always discontinue the use of the ointment.

Dosage

A 1/2 inch strip of Gentak Ophthalmic Ointment is applied to the affected eye(s) of the pet 2 to 4 times a day.

Side Effects

Gentak Ophthalmic Ointment might give rise to severe side effects such as eye irritation, burning, or stinging, swelling of the eye. Besides, ophthalmic ointments also have the tendency to retard corneal healing.
