What Does R D Mean in Cat Food?
Answer

Veterinarians prescribe the Hill's Prescription Diet R/D by the Hill's company to cats needing weight loss. The R/D in the name of the cat food stands for Reducing Diet. The diet is low in fat but offers above-average protein content and moderate carbs to the cat. The canned cat food is made of chicken and has a ground texture with a light gravy to make it palatable for the cat. Hill's claims that cat food is quite effective in weight management and has been clinically tested to achieve healthy weight loss in just four weeks. The canned food provides clinical nutrition that helps metabolize fat and maintain lean muscle.

Do You Need a Prescription for Hill's Prescription Diet?
Answer

The Hill's Prescription Diet series of pet food is formulated to modify metabolism and address specific health conditions in pets. For this reason, a veterinarian's involvement is required for the purchase of the food. The Hill's Prescription R/D is designed to boost metabolism and the rate at which the body burns the fat. Considering this food addresses a medical condition, a vet's prescription is sought by most online retailers. Technically, you don't need a prescription for Hill's prescription dog food. If you purchase the food directly from a vet, you can buy it over the counter without requiring a prescription. Moreover, since the prescription diet is meant for specific conditions and might cause medical conditions if fed without guidance, it's better to consult a veterinarian.

Why Do Vets Recommend Hills?
Answer

Did you know that Hill's is one of the only three brands in the US to manufacture specialized prescription diets? According to the brand, these diet foods are especially formulated to support pets' happy and active lives. Hill's claims that it took years of research and food trials to back this claim. This is the reason why many veterinarians recommend Hill's company food for pets with special needs. Moreover, research has shown that Hill's diet brand of food is actually effective, and claims are actually valid. Hence, it's no surprise that vets recommend Hill's.

Why Is Prescription Food So Expensive?
Answer

It's a long-standing debate whether the premium price tag of veterinarians developed prescription diets are a scam or not. It's believed that the backing of the vet community and helplessness of parents to sick pets is what drives the price up. However, that's not the case. What drives the price high is the years of research and experimenting, which finally brings the specialized food to the market. Month-long extensive testing with bloodwork and other diagnostics can get expensive. Moreover, these tests are repeated with every modification in the formula. Therefore, it's not feasible to have a viable product without incorporating the cost of research into the cost of the diet. In simpler terms, prescription diets are not some get-rich-quick scheme by pet food brands and vets. You're instead paying for the science and research behind the particular prescription diet.

What Can I Give My Cat to Lose Weight?
Answer

Even a two-pound gain over the ideal weight can put your cat at risk of some serious ailments like type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, and more. There are many weight management diets available in the market with proven nutrition for healthy weight loss. However, for significant weight loss, you'll have to consult your veterinarian for specialized veterinary weight-loss diets. These specialized diets are formulated to boost metabolism, have high fiber content, high protein, and low carbs. Almost every specialized prescription diet food is designed to make your cat feel full between meals, burn calories fast, and lose weight effectively.

What Is the Best Metabolic Cat Food?
Answer

Many metabolic cat foods are available in the market, each with a specific target like boosting metabolism or burning calories fast. Brands like Purina, Royal Canin, and Hill's have special prescription diets formulated just for weight management in obese cats. Some of the best cat foods for metabolism are Hill's Prescription R/D, Hill's Prescription W/D, Purina Proplan OM, Royal Canin Calorie Control, and Hill's Prescription Diet Metabolic. Each of these prescription cat food is designed for different purposes; therefore, please consult your veterinarian before picking any one of these.

What Is a Healthy Cat Weight?
Answer

There's no average healthy cat weight simply because every cat breed has its ideal weight. The healthy weight range is quite broad and based on the specific species and gender of your cat. Factors like whether your cat is spayed or neutered, mixed breed, and others also play a huge role in determining the ideal weight for the cat. However, it's accepted widely that most domestic cats should ideally weigh around 10 pounds or 4.5 kilos. Again, this varies depending on the breed of your cat. To illustrate, a healthy Siamese might weigh as low as 5 pounds, whereas a Maine Coon can be 25 pounds and on top of its health.

Is Wet or Dry Food Better for Overweight Cats?
Answer

Standard dry cat food contains 3-4kcal/g on an average, with some diets having a higher calorie count. On the contrary, wet foods have 0.8-1.5kcal/g of calorific value, with some diet food like Hill's Prescription Diet R/D going even lower. Therefore, for a cat on weight management or weight loss program, wet food is ideal. It's advised to feed small portions of wet food throughout the day instead of putting down copious amounts of food in one go.

L
Good, but needs more flavors.

To Hills: Please consider adding flavor options beyond chicken. It would help with cats getting bored of the same thing. Cat parents would also be more brand-loyal (hence, buy more from you) if their pets were happier with it. Please consider.

My cat needs the RD canned food diet but doesn't like this. He'll eat the dry food but not the canned. Wish you would make the RD with a variety of flavors instead of liver/chicken

I can only answer by what I observe. He looks forward to any eating time. Both dry and wet. finishes every bite. I think he eats too fast, but if I give in proportions,he seems to adjust. My vet only offers one flavor.

r/d wet and dry prescription food

My cat was 25+ lbs. Due to his weight issue he was very difficult to treat when he became ill. Vet put him on r/d wet and dry prescription food and within 6 mos has already dropped 11 lbs. I know he feels so much better and I can now pick him up with ease.
