Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a condition often associated with advanced age. According to recent data, 1 out of 10 dogs will develop CKD in their lifetime. It is also common for senior dogs to develop other age-related conditions, such as reduced mobility or cognitive decline, which can significantly impact the quality of life of both the pet and the pet parent. Studies have also shown that 80% of dogs greater than 8 years of age suffer from degenerative joint disease (DJD). Other data shows that 50% of dogs over 11 years of age display at least one sign of cognitive decline. Nutrition can play a key role in managing these age-related conditions. That is why Hill's nutritionists and veterinarians developed a new Prescription Diet k/d+Mobility for dogs. This nutrition of k/d+Mobility is formulated to protect vital kidney function, improve mobility, and increase alertness and vitality in older dogs. In fact, the nutrition of k/d is clinically tested to improve & lengthen quality of life.

Why is kidney dog food prescription-based?
Answer

Kidney dog food is often prescription-based because it's formulated to address specific health conditions in pets, such as kidney issues. Anne Caldwell shares her personal experience, stating that her dog's veterinarian prescribed a urinary diet low in protein to reduce stress on the kidneys. Prescription pet foods are tailored to manage various health concerns, ensuring optimal nutrition while supporting the pet's overall well-being. Caldwell emphasizes the importance of discussing these diets thoroughly with a veterinarian to ensure they align with the pet's individual needs and health requirements.Reference: https://www.quora.com/What-are-the-benefits-of-prescription-pet-food/answer/Anne-Caldwell-24?ch=10&oid=1477743659813928&share=a31cb3ea&srid=hpmxqX&target_type=answer

How does kidney care dog food work?
Answer

Kidney care dog food is specially formulated to support dogs with chronic kidney disease (CKD). Compared to regular maintenance adult dog food, kidney support diets feature reduced levels of protein, sodium, and phosphorus, along with increased omega-3 fatty acids. These adjustments help prevent metabolic acidosis and alleviate strain on the kidneys. Available through veterinarians, these specialized diets are tailored to meet the unique dietary requirements of dogs with CKD. Regular consultation with a veterinarian ensures that the dog receives appropriate nutritional support and monitoring to optimize their quality of life despite their condition.

Does kidney failure in dogs happen suddenly?
Answer

Kidney failure in dogs can manifest as either acute or chronic. Acute kidney failure occurs suddenly, often due to factors like ingestion of toxins or urinary obstruction. Prompt detection and treatment offer the possibility of reversal. Conversely, chronic kidney failure is an irreversible condition characterized by gradual deterioration of kidney function. Although there is no cure, symptoms can be managed through interventions such as fluid therapy and dietary modifications. While acute kidney failure requires immediate attention, chronic kidney failure necessitates ongoing management to minimize symptoms and maintain the dog's quality of life. Regular veterinary care is essential for monitoring and adjusting treatment plans as needed.

Can dogs recover from kidney disease?
Answer

Recovery from kidney disease in dogs depends on various factors, including the severity of the condition, early detection, and prompt treatment. Acute kidney disease, if detected and treated quickly, can sometimes be reversed, leading to partial or full recovery. However, chronic kidney disease is typically irreversible, as it involves progressive damage to the kidneys over time. While there's no cure for chronic kidney disease, symptoms can be managed through medications, dietary modifications, and supportive care to improve the dog's quality of life. Regular veterinary monitoring is essential to assess the dog's response to treatment and adjust the management plan accordingly.

What are the early warning signs of kidney disease?
Answer

Early warning signs of kidney disease in dogs include increased urination and thirst, often noticed first by pet owners. According to Dr. Jerry Klein, Chief Veterinary Officer for the AKC, symptoms like loss of appetite, blood or protein in the urine, and bad breath may indicate chronic kidney disease (CKD). However, these signs may not appear until significant kidney damage has occurred. Additionally, rarer symptoms such as abdominal pain, urinary obstructions, oral or gastric ulcers, and decreased urine production may occur in more severe cases. Regular veterinary check-ups are crucial for early detection and management of kidney disease in dogs. Reference: https://www.akc.org/expert-advice/health/dog-kidney-disease/

What foods help repair kidneys in dogs?
Answer

Dogs with renal health issues benefit from a diet featuring high-quality protein, low phosphorus and sodium content, and added omega-3 fatty acids. This can include a mix of good quality meat, such as lean chicken or turkey, along with vegetables like bell peppers. Additionally, incorporating omega-3 supplements or sources like fish, flax, sardines, or anchovies can further support kidney health. These dietary adjustments help manage the progression of kidney disease by providing essential nutrients to support overall renal function.

What not to feed a dog with kidney disease?
Answer

Dogs with kidney disease should avoid foods high in phosphorus, sodium, and low-quality protein, as these can exacerbate symptoms and further strain the kidneys. Foods to avoid include table scraps, processed foods, high-salt snacks, and those containing artificial additives. Additionally, foods rich in phosphorus such as dairy products, organ meats, and certain grains should be limited. Treats, particularly those with high phosphorus or sodium content, should also be restricted.

How long do dogs live with kidney disease?
Answer

Dogs diagnosed with kidney disease, especially in older age, typically have varied survival rates. According to veterinarian Marge Chandler, while some dogs can live for a couple of years with proper management, others may only survive for a few months. Key factors influencing survival include adherence to a therapeutic diet, medications to address complications, and treatments to regulate serum phosphorus levels. These interventions aim to improve the dog's quality of life and potentially extend their lifespan despite the challenges posed by kidney disease. S
Its a yes from me

My 5 year old German Shepherd mix has hip dysplasia, poor genetics, but is always on the go. We could not stay as active as we've been without Hills J/D diet! This diet has changed my dogs life and has kept her SO comfortable for the last 2 years we've been feeding her this where she doesn't show any signs of discomfort or pain. I cannot recommend this enough!

T
I hate this food.

I have a teacup, 5lb, 15 year old dog. This food is to large and hard for her. I spend hours using a pill cutter to feed her. Also, it'd be nice to buy in smaller quantity. 1 bag has lasted almost 7 months. Do you want to eat something that has been opened and closed sitting around for 7 months?

Tinkerbell recommends this item.

Our beloved German Shepherd

Our beloved German Shepherd was put on this food two weeks ago. He has shown a lot of improvement in mental function, and now gets up on his own wanting to walk, and interact with his family
