If you had to clean your cat’s litter box on a regular basis, then you would have pondered on this question, is toilet training your cat a good idea? At first, it seems like a great idea because you no longer have to worry about keeping your cat’s litter clean. On top of that, you don’t have to deal with the smell. However convenient it may seem, it isn’t a good idea to toilet train your feline friend because it does more harm than good. Here are four reasons why it isn’t a good idea to toilet train your cat:
- It’s harder to monitor your cat’s healthA variety of feline diseases can be detected at its early stages when you take a look at the litter box. For example, if your cat has constipation or diarrhea, your feline’s feces/urine will have blood or the size of the feces will be larger than usual. Having a litter box will make it easier to identify to feline diseases.
- It’s stressful and unnatural to eliminate waste in a toiletIt is unnatural for your cat to go to the toilet every time it has to eliminate waste. When cats eliminate waste naturally, they dig a hole and cover up their urine/feces. Cats do this to cover their smell so that they can survive in the wild. Also, it can be stressful for your cat if it meets with an accident while using the toilet. For example, if it falls into the toilet or gets hurt, it will be scared to use the toilet. As a result of this, your cat will begin eliminating waste in and around your house.
- The odor won’t go awayOne of the major reasons why most people want to toilet train their cats is to get rid of the odor. However, when your cat starts eliminating in the toilet, even the bathroom will begin to smell. Besides, cats don’t know how to flush once they are done. If you do teach your cat how to flush, it might use the toilet all day, just to watch the water go down the toilet.
- You always have to leave your bathroom door open and toilet lid upWhen you teach your cat how to use the toilet, you will always have to leave the bathroom door open. Also, you will have to keep the toilet lid up so that your cat can use it without any problems. However, if you fail to do so, then your cat will either defecate inside your house or hold it till it finds another alternative.
