Dogs and cats can live together without any problems and live a harmonious and joyful life. If you are planning on getting a new dog and you want the dog and your cat to become best friends, introduction is the first and most important step.Follow these steps to introduce a new dog to your cat:

Step 1: Select a proper location for the meeting

Since you are getting a dog, you shouldn’t take your feline to meet the canine in its shelter. Your feline will be stressed out in the shelter. Also, you can’t consider the canine’s behavior in the shelter to be an indicator of how it will behave in your house. The best place for the introduction to take place is within the comforts of your house.

Step 2: Keep the animals separate

Over the next few days, you need to allow one animal to be free while the other has the stay in your room. Keep rotating the animals every day so that they have sufficient time to get used to each other’s scent. If you are finding it hard to control your canine, you can keep it in a crate till it calms down. Once your feline is calm, starts eating properly and uses the litter box without any problems, you can proceed to the next step. However, if your canine starts barking at your feline for more than a day or two, it is an indicator that the introduction won’t work. If you can’t get your canine to calm down, you will need a professional to help you out.

Step 3: Leash the canine and introduce it to your feline

Now that your feline and canine are okay with each other’s scent, you can begin the face-to-face introduction. Allow both of them to be in the same room but keep your canine on a leash. Do this every day till your canine is calm around the feline. Also, there shouldn’t be any change in the way your feline behaves, eats its meals and uses the litter box. If there are any signs of aggression or fear, you need to go back to step 2. Continue introducing the canine to your feline till they are completely relaxed.

Step 4: Allow your canine and feline to bond

After a month or so, your new canine and your feline will be comfortable with each other. You can now allow them to bond so that they won’t hurt each other again. However, do check on them once in a while to ensure they are getting along.Follow these simple steps to introduce a new dog to your cat. If you have any queries, feel free to leave a comment below.
