Can Dogs Eat Watermelon?

Don’t tell me that when the summer heat arrives, you don’t think of this huge red and juicy fruit! So why can’t your little four-pawed buddy enjoy your summer treat too? Luckily, watermelon fruit has so many great benefits for dogs, but be wary of the precautions that will be discussed below.

The Good

You should know that watermelon is low calorie, low sodium, fat-free, and cholesterol-free. It is 92% water, which makes it a necessity on a hot day.  In general, summer fruits provide an instant boost of energy when you are feeling tired.

Watermelons are excellent sources of vitamins A, B6, C, and fiber. Vitamin A aids your eyesight, vitamin B6 improves immunity, and vitamin C energizes you.  The fiber in watermelon acts as an insulator for the fruit’s sugar to prevent it from releasing into the bloodstrem system so quickly.

Lastly, watermelon acts as a weak sunscreen to prevent skin damage from strong sun exposure, sunstroke, and cancer.  The fruit is even full of the cancer-battling antioxidant lycopene!

The Bad

There are several precautions for dogs to eat watermelon that damages their stomachs.  Watermelon seeds can cause a blockage in the dog’s digestive tract.  Watermelon rind can cause gastrointestinal upset including vomiting and constipation.

Make sure to feed your dog natural watermelon only, not artificial watermelon-flavored products.  Prepare small, seedless watermelon cubes for a fresh dog snack. If your dog shows any negative sign, make sure to consult your veterinarian.

The Funny

Dogs Eating Watermelon became a huge internet trend in 2018 with Jenelle Bannister’s uber-popular minute-long video on Twitter of her adorable dog Cheshire eating a slice of watermelon.

Nowadays in 2020, we can find other funny Youtube videos and online products related to dogs and watermelons.  There are current trends of watermelon helmets, masks, plush toys, and COVID-19 face masks.
