Heartgard should be administered once a month year-round, or at least during and one month following mosquito season. It is available in flavored or unflavored chewable tablets that should not be swallowed whole (and can be broken up to prevent such a thing from happening). The usual dose in cats of 5 pounds or less is 55mcg and for cats 6-15 pounds is 165mcg.
