Two Dogs that love their Heartgard treats

I have two miniature daschunds and they both don't like taking pills, but they love Heartgard. They look forward to getting their medicine treat every month and in two years, I have never had any health issues with either one of them. I highly recommend this product. It works well and the dogs love the taste.

Now I have to come up with $359.90 for the treatment. Is there a history of building a tolerance to this product? Should I have been changing products every other year? What have I been spending $124 a year on test and preventative to end up with heartworms anyway? Who makes this stuff and how can I contact them? I'm VERY disappointed!!!

My Dog Loves it!

When I moved, my new Vet said they do not carry Heartgard. They just only sold heartworm preventative pills you have to put down the animal's throat (or try to break up and hide in their food!). I'm glad I found Pet Care Rx because my dog sits and begs for her Heartgard Plus! She recognizes the box when I take it out each month, and a chore has been changed to a delight! My dog is six years old now and very healthy!*This is a prescription item

Dolly's best treat

We have a 9 year old mini black & tan dachshaund. Dolly is her name, when we get the box to give her the Heartgard, she sits up and whines, and then starts nipping at our fingertips until we give her the Heartgard. She continues sitting until we tell her that is all she gets for now. She is so silly, Dolly loves Heartgard and we've given it to her ever since our vet Dr Ferguson recommended it. Great stuff and dogs love the taste of Heartgard.*This is a prescription item

They think these are treats!!

I have two dogs. A nine year old black lab (Harriet) and a three year old Catahoula Leopard dog (Hilda). Both have been on Heartgard since I adopted them. They're so silly - when they see me reach for the box, they run to the the drawer (where I keep the scissors) and dance all around. Goofy girls!!! Anyway, these things must work as we've never had any problems with heartworms. *This is a prescription Product

Thanks to Heartgard

When I was a kid, I had a poodle who died of heartworm disease, so it was on my mind quite a bit when my family got our puppy, Chelsea. I read a lot of books about puppy care, and about how to deal with puppy worms that might endanger her life. Finally I talked to my veterinarian, who recommended HEARTGARD Plus-a heartworm preventive that also takes care of other worms in puppies and dogs. The first time I gave Chelsea HEARTGARD Plus, I had to laugh. She loved it! It's been three years now, and Chelsea is happy, healthy and heartworm-free. We've never missed a dose-Chlesea sees me reaching for the box each month and comes running. It's been great knowing I'll never have to lose another friend to heartworms.

Understanding Heartworms

Heartworms: The Important Facts

Heartworm disease is a serious disease that affects dogs and cats (and other animals). Luckily this disease is completely preventable. And the prevention is EASY. Most “pet parents” wouldn't knowingly put their pets at risk of becoming infected with this potentially deadly disease, yet millions of pet owners fail to protect their animal from the heartworm infection.

What is heartworm?

Heartworm (Dirofilaria immitis) is a parasite that is transmitted by a mosquito. Heartworm can cause a life-threatening infection in your pet. Heartworm infection has been diagnosed in dogs all over the world and in all 50 states.

Heartworm Lifecycle

An infected mosquito bites your pet, takes a blood meal, and then regurgitates the larva into your pet’s bloodstream. The larva develops in your pet and forms adult worms in the vessels of the heart (it takes 6 months for the development from larva to adult). But how does the mosquito get infected in the first place? The female adult heartworms have babies called microfilaria. When a noninfected mosquito bites a pet that has heartworm microfilaria in the bloodstream, the mosquito becomes infected (and can infect other pets). When an animal gets heartworm disease, it can be serious and life threatening. These worms can stop the heart from pumping effectively causing serious damage. In most cases, dogs are the most common host for this disease. These worms can grow to be 6 - 10 inches in length.

But there are no mosquitoes around here so why should I worry?

You may think that your pet doesn’t need to be on heartworm prevention because it rarely goes outside (or never goes outside) and you never see mosquitoes. Why should you bother to give medication once a month? Mosquitoes are hard to see. Ever go to sleep and wake up with lots of mosquito bites? They are sneaky little guys. In the past veterinarians were not as concerned with heartworm disease in cats. But recent studies show that a heartworm infection in cats can lead to lung disease.

Why should I give heartworm medication year-round when it gets cold here in the winter and there are no mosquitoes?

Year-round heartworm prevention is recommended for several reasons.

  1. It is easier to remember to give the medication on a certain day each month.
  2. The medication often treats other things such as gastrointestinal parasites or ticks.
  3. Sometimes we have wacky weather and the mosquitoes come out at different times of the year than we expect.
  4. It is easy to prevent heartworm, but more costly and riskier to treat.
  5. If your pet travels, there may be mosquitoes at the vacation spots.

Clinical Signs of Heartworm disease

Dogs infected with heartworm disease can have various clinical signs including lethargy, exercise intolerance, cough, weight loss, decreased appetite, or even have no clinical signs. As the worms build up in the pulmonary arteries, there are changes to the walls of the arteries and the heart has to work harder against the increased pressures that the worms cause. Eventually, left untreated, this could lead to congestive heart failure and death.

A recent clinical syndrome of cat heartworm has been described called HARD or Heartworm Associated Respiratory Disease. Cats with heartworm infection can exhibit signs of respiratory illness which are similar to cats with asthma or allergic airway disease (coughing, wheezing). In the past cats were not tested often or treated for heartworm disease because the treatment could be very risky. Heartworm disease in cats is different than dogs—usually worms are of a single gender and the disease is difficult to diagnose because of low worm burdens. However, many veterinary researchers are now recommending that cats are given heartworm preventative.

How do I know if my pet has heartworm?

Most veterinarians test pets annually for heartworm disease as part of the annual examination. The test is based on a simple blood test. The American Heartworm Society recommends yearly testing for heartworm even if the pet is on preventative year-round. This is because no drug can be 100% effective, sometimes we forget a dose, sometimes our pets don’t eat the medication or hide it. It is a little harder to determine if cats have heartworm and they are not routinely tested for it at most hospitals unless they have clinical signs.

If your veterinarian suspects heartworm disease, in addition to the blood test your pet may need radiographs of his chest, urinalysis, and possibly an ultrasound of his heart.

Treatment

In dogs that are infected with heartworm, the treatment depends on the severity of the infection. The veterinarian will classify the dog’s stage of disease and treat accordingly. Usually, dogs are given a deep intramuscular injection of a drug that kills the adult worms. Dogs that are severely infected may have a protracted course of treatment where the injections are spread out over several months. The dog needs to be exercise restricted during these treatments and at home, because the dying adult worms can cause further disease as they die (pulmonary embolism). Some veterinarians will institute heartworm preventative concurrently or before treating the adult worms to decrease the amount of microfilariae and reduce the worm mass. Your veterinarian will know the best course of treatment for your pet. The sooner the disease is diagnosed and treated, the better the chance for a good outcome.

Warning

Some breeds of dogs can be sensitive to some medications that prevent heartworm disease (such as ivermectin or milbemycin). Dogs, especially herding breeds, may have a mutation that causes them to be sensitive to a wide variety of medications. However, even herding breed dogs with MDR-1 receptor mutations may not be sensitive to the low levels of drugs in these preventatives. It is very important to discuss heartworm prevention with your veterinarian.

It is also important to use the product that is specifically made for the species you are treating. Therefore, medication for dogs should not be used for cats; medications for cows should not be used for dogs. Such use is called “off-label use” and can be done in rare instances under the advice of your veterinarian.

Prevention

To avoid the expense and suffering that heartworm disease causes, talk to your veterinarian about the appropriate preventative actions for your pet. Usually your veterinarian will recommend starting preventative during the puppy or kitten visits. Heartworm prevention comes in various forms, some are oral (Heartgard, Heartgard plus, Interceptor, Sentinel) and some are topical (Revolution, Advantage Multi).

The best defense against heartworms is prevention- don't let heartworms get your pet – be proactive and keep your best friend “heart healthy”!

  8. Do I have to use Heartgard plus year round or only during the mosquito season?

Heartgard Plus should be given at monthly intervals during the period of the year when mosquitoes, potentially carrying infective heartworm larvae, are active. The initial dose must be given within a month (30 days) after the dog’s first exposure to mosquitoes. The final dose must be given within a month (30 days) after the dog’s last exposure to mosquitoes.

  9. What happens if I missed my monthly schedule by a day or even as much as 30 days?

If the interval between doses exceeds a month (30 days), the efficacy of ivermectin can be reduced. Therefore, for optimal performance, the chewable must be given once a month on or about the same day each month. If treatment is delayed, whether by a few days or many, immediate treatment with Heartgard Plus and resumption of the recommended dosing regimen will minimize the opportunity for the development of adult heartworms.
