Generic Name

Oseltamivir

Indications/Uses

Tamiflu, a human antiviral medication, is used for the treatment of Parvovirus in dogs. The impact of parvo is dominant in puppies that are no longer supported by antibodies in their mother’s milk. Rottweilers and Dobermans are more susceptible to the virus. The disease is not reported to be dangerous to cats or humans. The active ingredient, oseltamivir phosphate, works by attacking the virus in the body and prevents it from spreading. The drug is efficient against influenza virus and inhibits it from spreading. Tamiflu is an active neuraminidase inhibitor. The absence of neuraminidase prevents the colonization of pathogenic bacteria and inhibits the viral particles released from infected cells. There are no known drug interactions with oseltamivir phosphate.

Precautions

Tamiflu is not effective against distemper virus and other forms of gastroenteritis. The medication is not approved to be used in small animals. Puppies with chronic parvo symptoms like septicemia or severe dehydration may not react to tamiflu. The medication is effective only if given early in the course of infection.

Side Effects

Side effects observed from veterinary medicine are limited. Serious side effects observed from the human use of tamiflu include difficulty in breathing, ear ache/infection, skin rash and inflammation of the nose and chest. Coughing, diarrhea, dizziness, headache, vomiting and nausea are most commonly observed side effects.

Dosage Information

Tamiflu is a prescription-only medicine and is not FDA approved for use in dogs. Tamiflu is available as capsules and as a powder for oral suspension. The dosage recommended for dogs is different from that suggested for humans. Get the assistance of a veterinarian or pharmacist for the accurate dosage.
