Indications/Uses
Triamcinolone is an anti-inflammatory drug belonging to the category of synthetic glucocorticoid drugs, and is commonly used in managing inflammation and pain. It is used for treating various conditions like arthritis, allergic skin conditions such as lick granuloma, dermatitis and atopy besides ear and eye infections. In cats, it is used to treat feline plasma-cell gingivitis-pharyngitis and muscle inflammation. Triamcinolone is a prescription medication and is available as injection, tablets, oral syrup and ointment.
Precautions
Triamcinolone is not recommended in animals that are hypersensitive to steroids as the effects of the drug might persist for many days. Desist from using Triamcinolone for the treatment of viral and fungal infections or just before surgical procedures as it may hinder the healing of wounds. It is not recommended in nursing animals. There is a possibility that Triamcinolone might interact with certain other medicines such as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and other steroids. Never use Triamcinolone in pets suffering from corneal ulcers, glaucoma, diabetes mellitus, Cushing's syndrome, heart ailments, or stomach ulcers. Vaccination of animals under triamcinolone treatment is best avoided as it can reduce the effects of the vaccine.
Side Effects
Common side effects include nausea, behavioral problems, weakness, increased thirst, and urination, and breathlessness. Prolonged use of triamcinolone might set off side effects like hair loss, muscle weakness, diarrhea, adrenal gland suppression, etc.
Dosage Information
Triamcinolone is presented as injectable suspension of various strengths of 2 mg/ml and 6 mg/ml. Triamcinolone tablets are available in 1 mg, 2 mg, 4 mg and 8 mg while the oral syrup comes in 4 mg/5 mg. It is available in combination with other drugs in topical ointments like Panalog. The doses of triamcinolone vary with the severity of the condition and the response of the animals; hence, follow the dosage recommended by the veterinarian. Normally, the daily doses might vary from 0.05 mg to 1 mg per pound, administered for a week.
