Indications/Uses
Clomicalm is a tricyclic antidepressant, which is used in the treatment of dogs suffering from separation anxiety. Clomipramine, FDA approved for human use, is used to treat aggression and obsessive-compulsive disorders such as tail chasing. Clomipramine hydrochloride, the active ingredient of Clomicalm, blocks the reuptake of neurotransmitters. Clomicalm is prescribed in the treatment of separation-related disorders symptomized by destruction and inappropriate defecation and urination. Clomicalm is also used for the control of stereotypies in dogs and in urine spraying in cats.
Precautions
Clomicalm is not authorized to be used in breeding dogs. Attention should be paid to breeding dogs suffering from cardiovascular dysfunction, epilepsy, narrow angle glaucoma, reduced gastrointestinal motility or urinary retention. Clomicalm should be prescribed with extreme care, only after making a true assessment of the benefit and the risks associated with the medication. Clomicalm is not advisable when consumed in combination with monoamine oxidase inhibitors.Never use Clomicalm or any other tricyclic antidepressants in animals that are allergic to it. Do not use Clomicalm in pregnant, nursing or breeding females, or with other central nervous system (CNS) depressants such as barbiturates. Inform the veterinarian about what other medications the pet is taking.
Side Effects
Clomicalm has several adverse side effects such as lethargy/depression, elevation in liver enzymes, vomiting, diarrhea, and increased thirst.
Dosage Information
Clomicalm is administered orally at a usual dose of 1 - 2 mg/kg, clomipramine twice daily to give a total daily dose of 2 - 4 mg/kg. The medicine is available in oral, beef flavored tablets of 3 strengths: Clomicalm 5, 20 and 80 containing 5.00 mg, 20.00 mg and 80.00 mg clomipramine hydrochloride, respectively. Clomipramine is available by prescription in the form of tablets and capsules. The usual dosage of Clomicalm in dogs is 0.9-1.8mg/pound every 24 hours.
