Tresaderm

Generic Name

Thiabendazole, dexamethasone, neomycin sulfate

Indications/Uses

Tresaderm is a common veterinary medicine indicated for treating ear and skin infections of dogs and cats caused by many strains of bacteria including Pseudomonas, Proteus and Staphylococcus. It is also effective against external parasitic infections caused by ticks and mites, and also in fungal attacks caused by the yeast, Malassezia. Tresaderm is effective for conditions like acute and chronic otitis, and skin infections like dermatomycoses caused by molds. It is not of use in managing viral infections.

Precautions

Though Tresaderm is useful for de-worming and in treating fungal infections of the nasal cavity, it is not recommended to use this product as it has many side effects. As it is not effective for viral infections, it is very important to precisely diagnose the condition before initiating the medication. It should not be used for more than a week, and is only for external use in dogs and cats. Take care to avoid contact with the eyes of the animals while administering this medicine. Tresaderm should be refrigerated.

Side Effects

In animals that are hypersensitive to neomycin this drug might result in redness and inflammation of the treated area, which usually subsides in a day or two. Its safety in pregnant animals is not proven. Though Tresaderm does not interact with other medications, it is advisable to ensure that Tresaderm is safe to use with the current medications of the animal.

Dosage Information

Tresaderm is presented in 7.5 ml and 15 ml dropper bottles. The recommended dose could vary from 5-15 drops to be administered in the ear canal, for a week. For skin conditions, apply two to four drops per square inch of the infected area twice a day for a week, after cleaning the area. It is recommended to follow the dosage schedule of the veterinarian as the dosage might vary according to the severity of the infection and response of the animal.
