Indications/Uses

Terramycin belongs to the tetracyclines class of drugs. The medication is effective against a wide range of bacteria including those infecting the eyes, bones, sinuses, respiratory tract and blood cells. Terramycin is effective for the treatment of bacterial enteritis and bacterial pneumonia in swine, calves, beef cattle, non-lactating dairy cattle and sheep. In honey bees, it is effective for the control of American foulbrood triggered by paenibacillus larvae. In chickens and turkeys, it is used for the treatment of hexamitiasis caused by hexamita meleagridis.Terramycin, belonging to the tetracyclines antibiotics group, has the ability to inhibit the growth of a wide range of bacteria. It works by interfering with the production of proteins that the bacteria need to multiply and divide, thus hampering the spread of the infection.

Precautions

It is advised to make fresh solutions every 24 hours, and make sure to prepare the solution using drinking water and not liquid feed supplements. It is not recommended to use the medication in chickens or turkeys producing eggs for human consumption. Avoid administering the product with milk or milk replacers. It is safe to administer one hour before or two hours after feeding milk/milk replacers. In honey bees, it is advised to feed the drug early in the spring or fall, and make sure that it is consumed by the bees before the main honey flow starts. This could prevent contamination of the honey.

Dosage Information

For swine, calves, beef cattle, non-lactating dairy cattle and sheep, administer the medication in drinking water at a level of 10 mg oxytetracycline HCl/lbs of body weight every 24 hours for 14 days. In chickens and turkeys the dosage is chosen based on the condition treated. In honey bees, it is dosed at 200 mg/colony.
