Indications/Uses
Metronidazole injection is a commonly used anti bacterial and anti protozoal agent. It is a highly effective medication used in the treatment of skin infections, infections affecting the central nervous system, bones and joints, respiratory tract, abdomen, and gynecologic infections. Conditions like Trichomoniasis or vaginal infection and several intestinal infections including dysentery can be effectively treated with the help of this medication. It has an anti-inflammatory effect on the bowel and is highly effective in killing anaerobic bacteria by acting on its DNA system. Besides it also possesses good immune modulating activities. Rectal administration of metronidazole injection is usually chosen when the patient is extremely weak and suffering from anorexia. Metronidazole injection is often preferred, as the tablets have an intolerable bitter taste making the process of administration difficult. Metronidazole is compatible with most of the antibiotics including penicillin, aminoglycosides and some cephalosporin.
Precautions
Do not administer Metronidazole to pregnant or lactating animals as it can cause birth defects in the offspring. In addition, avoid administering metronidazole injection on young puppies and kittens. Do not administer drugs like Phenobarbital and phenytoin while administering metronidazole injection as it may interact with metranidazole and thus increase the metabolism of metronidazole. Use with caution in animals suffering from kidney and liver ailments. Certain anti coagulants like warfarin and cimetidine also interact with metronidazole to give adverse effects. Toxicity due to overdose normally occurs 7 to 12 days after the administration of the injection. Anorexia, vomiting, depression, ataxia, disorientation, head-tilt, tremors, bradycardia, rigidity, stiffness, and seizures are some of the common side effects occurring due to over dosage.
Side Effects
Neurologastro-intestinal disorder, lethargy, weakness, neutropenias, hepatoxicity, hematuria, anorexia, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea are the most commonly reported side effects of this medication.
Dosage Information
Metronidazole injection is available as 5mg per ml injection vials. In dogs weighing 3-23mg/pound, administer the drug 1 to 4 times a day. In cats, the ideal is 5-23mg/pound 1-2 times a day. The actual dose and the duration of treatment depend on the specific condition. Where oral administration is not viable, injection is a good option.
